It’s hard to believe, but 2019 is already almost over! If your child hasn’t seen their pediatric dentist twice this year, you might as well wait until the new year rolls around, right? Wrong! Your dental insurance benefits in Poway do NOT roll over. That means that all those premiums you’ve been paying for are going to go to waste unless you take your child to the dentist before the end of 2019. Here’s how to maximize your dental insurance benefits to save you as much money as possible.

Use it or Lose It

Most dental insurance plans have what’s called a yearly maximum, which is the highest amount it will pay for your care during one calendar year. It usually ranges from $1,000 to $1,5000. Only about 3% of people with dental insurance even come close to using this amount. And, unfortunately, any unused leftover money does NOT roll over into the next year.

That money actually goes back to the insurance company, which is why most of the time, they don’t tell you about it. They want you to lose that money. Instead of losing benefits you’ve already paid for, let’s talk about a few ways you can maximize your coverage before 2020 gets here.

Take Your Child to Their Second Checkup and Cleaning

If your child hasn’t seen their pediatric dentist in Poway twice this year, then they’re really missing out. The American Dental Association recommends that every kid see their dentist twice a year to keep their smile healthy and treat minor issues while they’re still small. Most dental insurance plans pay for these visits 100%. Therefore, if your child has only been once this year, take them again before January. You likely won’t have to pay a cent out-of-pocket!

Don’t Waste Your Deductible

A deductible is the amount of money you have to pay out-of-pocket before your insurance company steps in and starts paying for your care. For most dental policies, your deductible is very small. Just like your yearly maximum, your deductible also resets at the beginning of every year. If you’ve already met your 2019 deductible, now is the time to get those fillings, crowns, or whatever procedure your child needs to make their smile shine. If you wait until 2020, you could be paying more for the same procedure.

Policies Might Change

At the start of the year, many insurance companies subtly raise their rates. This might result in a higher copay at your pediatric dentist’s office or higher premiums. To save yourself money, take your child in before January to avoid paying more for the same amount of care.

Your child’s smile is already precious. To keep it safe and healthy, make sure to see your pediatric dentist in Poway before 2019 ends.
